Late great flowers bloom
Over grandma's tomb
Where grandpa was buried
Pallbearers carried
The tune through the trees
A white painted breeze
Over shivering black coats
Smoke-lung parade floats
Past Jesus as a sheet ghost
A snow-colored Holy Host
Visions left unheard
Far beyond remembered
Dead songbirds sing amen
When the late great flowers live again
Icicle-covered stones
Rise above dead bones
Embedded bodies get cold feet
And dreams left incomplete
Leave all those hard-earned savings
In hyphenated engravings
I miss my dead grandparents
In dreams they make appearances
While the cemetery freezes
They rest in peace and I rest in pieces
Visions left unheard
Far beyond remembered
Dead songbirds sing amen
When the late great flowers live again

Father made me chop down the tree
It was back then, back when I was small
Twenty strikes was what it took
The tree shrieked, bent, then folded flat
Snow wrapped itself around the dead limb
Shivering, I sobbed into my scarf
I watched father drag the tree away
Later he burned it as we watched TV
The flames flickered, cracking in the air
The bark burned to bits of dust
And I never felt colder in my life
